Figure 2-Physicians per 100,000 Population by Various Specialties, by County Size in 1997

This line graph depicts the number of physicians in Family/General Practice, General Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology and General Surgery in counties ranging in size from a population of less than 2,500 to more than 3 million. There is a smaller concentration of physicians in General Pediatrics, General Surgery and Obstetrics/Gynecology in smaller counties (less than 10 per 100,000) than in larger countries (approximately 15 to 20 per 100,000). Family/General Practice physicians are abundant in most counties regardless of size at an average of 27 physicians per 100,000 people. Internal Medicine Physicians are most abundant in counties with a population of 1 to 3 million (53 per 100,000). However, only 47 Internal Medicine Physicians per 100,000 are available in counties of more than 3 million.
