This bar chart shows the number of physicians from six medical specialties/disciplines
(family or general practice, obstetrics/gynecology, general internal
medicine, general surgery, general pediatrics and all other specialties/disciplines)
caring for patients in each of four types of geographic areas: large
metropolitan areas of 1 million or more population; small metropolitan
areas of less than 1 million population; large rural areas of 10,000
or more population; and small rural areas of less than 10,000 population.
Only family or general practice physicians are nearly equally distributed
among the four types of geographic areas, with 24 per 100,000 people
in large metropolitan areas; 29 per 100,000 people in small metropolitan
areas; 28 per 100,000 people in large rural areas and 29 in small rural
areas. For all other specialties, the larger the area, the more physicians
caring for patients per 100,000 population. |
