Figure 3-Underrepresented Minorities in Allopathic Medical Schools and U.S. Population, 1968-1995

This line graph shows the steadily increasing minority population in the U.S. from 1968 to 1995, versus the slow growth of minority representation as Applicants, First Year Applicants and Graduates in U.S. medical schools. Although the percentage of minorities in the U.S has risen from 15% in 1968 to approximately 21% in 1995, minority representation in medical schools does not reflect this overall growth of the group. Although the number of minorities in medical school has grown over the past thirty years, in 1995 only an average of 9% were represented in medical schools.
